As Principal of P3 Health, Dr Parkinson works with national employers, organizations and start-ups to improve health, reduce excessive medical costs and optimize business competitiveness. He most recently served as Senior Medical Director, Health and Productivity for UPMC Health Plan and Workpartners. While at the University of Pittsburgh, he lead the December 2019 National Lifestyle Medicine Research Summit. Mike is a Past President of the American College of Preventive Medicine, the national medical specialty society of physicians trained in and committed to disease prevention and was founding principal, Chief Health and Medical Officer of Lumenos, a pioneer of consumer-directed health plans acquired by Anthem. A retired Air Force colonel, he served as Chief, Preventive Medicine and Associate Director of Medical Programs and Resources in the Office of the Surgeon General. While assigned to the US Public Health Service, he provided oversight of federal programs in public health, geriatrics and preventive medicine training. He was a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee evaluating NASA employee health programs, faculty for the 14-cities Robert Wood Johnson Foundation “Aligning Forces for Quality” project, Board member of the American Heart Association Great Rivers Affiliate and the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He currently serves on the (DoD) Defense Health Board, University of Iowa NIOSH Midwest Center for Workforce Excellence Advisory Board and the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. He obtained his AB from Cornell, MD from George Washington, family practice training at UCLA and MPH, preventive medicine residency and chief residency at Johns Hopkins.
