Season 1, Episode 2 Guest, Holly Wyatt, MD

Weight loss is sexy but weight loss maintenance is like watching paint dry. Join us for a fascinating discussion of the importance of maintaining lost weight with Holly Wyatt, MD, professor at University of Alabama, Birmingham, who has spent her career focused on the science of weight management. Her analogies and motivation are sure to help people better understand the secrets to maintaining lost weight such as:

• the importance of losing weight, as quickly and safely as possible, for a maximum of six months, then switching to weight maintenance for a few months before resuming weight loss;
• how exercise takes a front seat over diet during maintenance;
• being consistent, managing life’s curve balls and supportive connections.

Holly Wyatt Headshot

Holly Wyatt, MD
Dr. Holly Wyatt’s love for research began when she was just a child. She credits her father, an electrical engineer, with sparking her curiosity for the sciences and putting her on the path to becoming the clinical scientist she is today. Her personal challenges with “stopping the yo-yo” of dieting drove her to seek answers about metabolism and how the body and mind work together when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off forever.

Dr. Wyatt earned her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed her internal medicine and endocrinology training at the University of Colorado. She currently is a Professor at the University of Alabama Birmingham and is Vice Chair of Clinical Programs in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. She also is the co-founder for The State of Slim a transformative weight loss program that specializes in long-term strategies for weight management and transforming your life. Dr. Wyatt has more than 20 years of clinical experience in weight reduction using behavioral treatment, dietary therapy, physical activity interventions, weight loss medications, and surgery.

Dr. Wyatt has spent much of her research career following more than 10,000 “successful losers” in the National Weight Control Registry to investigate what makes people successful during their weight loss journey. She also has investigated the reasons why Colorado is the leanest state in the nation and is using her learnings and experiences to help Alabama become a healthier state. Her passion for and expertise in helping obese individuals successfully transform their bodies, minds, and lifestyles has made her a popular clinician, speaker, and obesity educator. Her reputation as an expert in weight loss led to her becoming the medical director for two seasons of the ABC-TV show Extreme Weight Loss and has made her a sought-after speaker and interviewee for conferences and media outlets including CNN, NBC, CBS, Bloomberg, and more. She shares much of what she has learned in her first book State of Slim, co-authored by James O. Hill, PhD. Overcoming the dreaded “weight loss plateau” is the focus of her next book due out in 2022. Dr. Holly currently splits her time between Denver, Colorado and Birmingham, Alabama.
