True Health Initiative Statement on Amazon Fires, Our Shared Planet and Human Health

From the Desk of the Director, Jennifer Lutz
The fires ravaging the Amazon forest are more than an environmental and public health tragedy, they are a call to action. The increase in fires in the Amazon is evident of large areas being cleared for agricultural meat production. You can help save the planet with every bite you take. Brazilian president, Bosonaro has relaxed protections on Amazon lands in his promotion of meat production for a simple reason: meat equals money.

You can help save the planet with every bite you take.

“Human consumption of animal-sourced food products is one of the strongest negative forces affecting the conservation of ecosystems and biological diversity. The burning of the Amazon rainforest to create cattle pastures or areas to grow livestock feed crops, is a prime example of this negative force” – Dr. William Ripple, esteemed expert in mammal ecology, biodiversity and conservation.

Brazilian president, Bosonaro has relaxed protections on Amazon lands in his promotion of meat production for a simple reason: meat equals money.

Money flows into Brazil from countries importing beef and cattle feed (corn and soybeans) to feed the insatiable human appetite for all things meat.  Much of these exports go to France and Germany.

Cattle ranching and crop production jointly accountfor nearly all South American tropical deforestation.

“Planetary integrity and our dietary trajectory are at odds,” says Dr. Gidon Eshel, an expert on geophysical consequences of agriculture and diet

We have more power than we think, and we exercise that power with every bite we take. As the authoritative voice on lifestyle as medicine, True Health Initiative offers the following facts:

• In much of the developed world, protein consumption exceeds public health requirements

• Quality protein comes from a variety of plants that produce ten to as high as fifty times more protein per acre than meat does, while generating about tenfold less greenhouse gas emissions and water polluting fertilizer runoff per g protein.

There are no healthy people on a destroyed planet.

Our planet is a magnificent ecosystem, with an incredible ability to sustain life.

The headline of the Amazon fires is not the fires.  The headline of the Amazon fires is public responsibility and our ability to make sustainable choices that protect our shared home.
