Mario Barbagallo, MD, PhD is Professor of Geriatrics and Director of the Geriatric Unit, University Hospital of Palermo. Director of the Post-graduate program in Geriatrics, University of Palermo, Italy. Chairman of the Clinical Section of IAGG-ER (International Association of Geriatrics European Region) for the years 2015-2019.

Born in Palermo, Italy, he obtained his medical degree in 1983. He worked in Parma and Rome where he obtained the PhD in 1989. From 1990 to 1992, he worked as Research Associate at the Cardiovascular Center, Cornell University Medical Center, New York (NY), USA, directed by John H. Laragh, and from 1993 to 1995 as a Visiting Professor and Fulbright Scholar at the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Hypertension, Department of Internal Medicine, Wayne State University, Detroit (MI), USA.

From 2000 he is full Professor of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and Chief of the Geriatric Unit of the University Hospital, in Palermo, Italy. From 2017-present he is also the Chief of the Department of Emergent Pathologies and Continuity of Assistance of the University Hospital, in Palermo, Italy.

He is an expert of nutritional problems, lifestyle education, and prevention and treatment of chronic diseases associated with aging, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

He is member of numerous National and International Scientific Societies and appreciated invited speaker in Italy and abroad. He is included in the list of the top Italian scientist (www.topitalianscientists.org). Author of about 500 publications in national and international scientific journals.
